What is ‘The Shop?’

Think of ‘The Shop’ as a community hub meets artist salon. ‘The Shop’ uses a combination of in-person and virtual meetings to connect early career theatre artists with community, workshops, and resources to develop their craft.

Our work is split into three core areas:

connection, development, and production

Connect

Get Together:

We host at least two in-person community meet-ups every month. These events create an open environment for artists to come together, meet new people, and build local community. Come hang out!

Stay Connected:

The Shop is very active on social media. A new addition to our online presence is the Artist Spotlight Series. Every week we will highlight an artist or group of artists working in our community. This series will serve as both a promotional tool and celebration of Chicago’s arts community.

Develop:

Workshop Sessions:

The Shop hosts theatre-focused workshops twice a month. These sessions consist of guided discussions, technical workshops, and opportunities to share/show work.

Examples of previous workshop sessions include:

  • Improv as a Generative Tool

  • Creating Systems for Reflecting and Goal Setting'

  • Writing Non-Fiction Stories

  • Navigating Leadership in Theatrical Space

The Writing Group:

The Writing Group is a virtual community space where creatives can read, workshop, and collaborate on each other’s written work. The Writing Group works in biweekly cycles. Twice a month, writers may submit up to 10 pages of work to be read and workshopped by their peers. The primary goal of The Writing Group is to help writers build routine and reach their project goals through community support.

The Writing Group also hosts regular in-person meetings to discuss the writing process, share work, and (of course) write!
